Crime Line hails service by The Citizen

09 Jun 2009

JOHANNESBURG - At a luncheon held yesterday to celebrate Primedia Crime Line’s second birthday The Citizen was recognised for its outstanding service and support for the initiative.

Speaking at the ceremony at Silver Sands Casino, Crime Line Head Yusuf Abramjee said the initiative had been very successful in getting information from the tip-offs coming into crime line. “We have arrested and deported illegal immigrants and people wanted for various crimes including murder, robbery and rape.” he said.

“We appreciate all the information we receive from the public and would like them to continue sending us their crime tip-offs on 32211,” he said.

Abramjee announced to the delegates attending that one of the world’s most wanted paedophiles was arrested in the UK yesterday after Crime Stoppers International and its affiliate programmes across the globe, including Crime Line, circulated his details.

Operation Infra, as it is called, is aimed at getting police agencies in the various participating countries to locate and apprehend internationally sought-after fugitives.

More than 800 suspects have been arrested in South Africa thanks to the Crime Line initiative.
